When chinook winds come down off the Flatirons, they can rip off chimney caps, peel back flashing and push smoke straight back into the house. Dry, windy winters raise the stakes on loose embers too. Interlocken Chimney & Masonry keeps north-metro chimneys sealed, capped and burning safely, and we answer the phone at 3 AM as readily as at 3 PM.
Choose a situation
Loose screws and light caps go first. Without one, snow, birds and rain head straight down the flue.
Gusts get under the metal where the chimney meets the roof. The next storm brings a ceiling stain.
Years of wind and freeze-thaw loosen the top courses. They can fall in the next big gust.
Strong wind across the chimney top creates downdrafts. A wind-directional cap usually fixes it.
From brick chimneys on 1970s Westminster ranches to direct-vent gas units in brand-new Anthem homes.

Wind & embersHeavy stainless caps fastened to stay put in a chinook, with spark arrestor mesh and wind-directional designs for drafty chimneys.
Direct ventHazy glass, a pilot that won't stay lit, or a burner that roars. We clean, test and tune gas fireplaces in new and older homes.
Secure the topLoose top courses relaid, crowns rebuilt and soft joints repointed so the chimney stands up to the next storm.
ReliningCracked clay tiles relined with stainless, and wood or gas inserts installed for real heat.
Middle of the nightCap gone in a windstorm, a leak pouring in, an animal trapped, or smoke in the house. Call any time, day or night.
The December 2021 Marshall Fire showed how fast wind-driven fire moves through grassland neighborhoods in Superior and Louisville. A chimney can't stop a wildfire, but it shouldn't add embers on a dry, windy night either.
Mesh sized to catch embers while letting smoke out, in the openings building code calls for.
When fire danger is high, skip the wood fire. Gas fireplaces don't throw embers.
No dry leaves or branches near the chimney top or in the gutters below.
Fireplace ash can hold heat for days. Store it outside in a lidded metal can, away from the house.
Look from the ground first. Never climb onto a roof in the wind. If anything looks off, call us.
From the yard, look for a missing or tilted cap and mesh.
Brick bits or mortar on the shingles or in the gutters mean the top is coming loose.
Look at the ceiling and walls by the chimney for new water marks.
Light a small fire. Smoke spilling into the room means call before using it again.

Yes, around the clock, including weekends and holidays. Emergencies like a cap torn off in a windstorm, water coming in or smoke filling a room can get a crew out at any hour.
They can. Strong downslope gusts can tear off caps, lift flashing and loosen the top rows of brick, especially on chimneys whose mortar is already worn. A quick check after a big wind event catches problems before the next storm.
It's a metal mesh screen built into the chimney cap that catches embers before they leave the flue. The residential code sizes the openings so they block anything larger than 1/2 inch while still letting smoke out. On wood-burning chimneys in dry, windy areas, it's a smart upgrade.
Wind blowing across the top of the chimney can push air back down the flue. A wind-directional cap, a taller flue extension or fixing a nearby roof obstruction usually solves it.
Yes. New direct-vent units often leave a film on the glass after the first season, and pilots, gaskets and vent terminations should be checked every year for safe operation.
